About Travel Sickness

Travel sickness is caused by excessive and repetitive stimulations of motion-detecting hair cells in the inner ear. Travel sickness is triggered when the brain receives conflicting messages that do not match the degree of movement detected by the inner ear. Travel sickness is a common condition thought to affect nearly three-quarters of all travellers. Anyone can suffer from the symptoms, however, it is particularly common in children. One in three people are considered to be highly susceptible to travel sickness, a further third only suffer during fairly rough conditions while another third only react under prolonged violently rough conditions perhaps brought about by turbulence or rough seas.

In its mildest form travel sickness may only trigger:

  • A feeling of slight uneasiness or discomfort
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness

In more severe cases it can lead to many symptoms including:

  • Paleness
  • Excessive sweating and salivation
  • Flushing
  • Vertigo and feelings of distress

A bout of travel sickness can be brought on by many modes of transport including car, plane or boat. It can even be a problem when riding such forms of transport as a horse, camel or elephant! In some cases, anxiety can also be a contributing factor, indeed past bad experiences can increase the chances of it happening.
